Wendy’s Frescata Sandwiches

I’ve wondered for years why there isn’t a restaurant that serves the needs of people who want to eat healthy food on the run. There may be regional examples, but I have never found a drive-thru restaurant that delivers high quality, healthy food. Sure, you can always order a salad, but they are seldom satisfying; and beyond that, there is little choice.
Millions of Americans are on a diet at any given time, and nearly every American has a need at some point to eat without stopping to sit down — yet this market is curiously underserved. Why doesn’t at least one restaurant exploit this niche?
Well, it looks like at least one may be waking up to the idea.
Wendy’s recently changed their menu so that a combo could include a baked potato, chili, or a salad instead the old standby French fries. They have since added Baked Lays to the list of choices. This was a great move towards the health market, and it made Wendy’s stand apart from the other chains in the mind of consumers.
Now it seems they have gone a step further with the introduction of a new line of sandwiches called ‘Frescata’. They are essentially deli-style sandwiches like you might find in Panera — and they are fantastic! I was literally shocked at how good the taste was. The meat and veggies were fresh, but the bread is the real treat. It has the taste of a great bagel: it is crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside.
They are reasonably low in calories too: they all come in under at 500. It isn’t exactly low-cal, but it beats the 800+ calorie monsters you can find at places like Panera and Atlanta Bread Company.
I hope they are a hit with consumers, because I would love to see more of this.
