Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

In the spirit of the holiday, HealthHacks presents the top ten hangover hacks:

10. Eat a vitamin and mineral rich meal with plenty of liquids before drinking: alcohol depletes both.

9. Skip the carbonated beverages while drinking: these can increase the uptake of the alcohol.

8. Stick to the clear liquors: vodka and gin have lower levels of congeners — chemicals that contain such wonderful things as butanol and methanol — than darker drinks such as whiskey or bourbon.

7. Take a B vitamin complex: this will help replenish stores the liver uses breaking down the alcohol.

6. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water or fruit juices: this slows down the rate you drink and hydrates you.

5. Avoid Tylenol, Aspirin, and other painkillers before bed: although they may help in the morning, they are not advised due to their impact on the stomach after drinking. If you must take one, take it after breakfast the following morning — and still avoid Tylenol.

4. Rub lemon slices under your arm pits: I have no clue how this works, but have heard from reputable sources it does.

3. Take Borage Oil: this has been shown (in the British Medical Journal) to significantly reduce hangover related symptoms.

2. Don’t drink more than 1 alcoholic beverage per hour: this is about the time it takes the liver to process the alcohol in 1 drink.

1. Don’t drink! This one is guaranteed to work.
