I was in Target the other day and noticed they had the new Gillette Fusion Razors in stock. If you have not heard of these yet, you will. They are planning a massive ad blitz to begin during the Super Bowl. Anyway, they are the new 5 blade mega razors. They come in both a manual and a powered version.

Being a sucker for anything new, improved, or just packaged differently, I tossed it in the cart. I have used the Mach3 Power since it came out a few years ago, and have always thought it gave a great shave. With the Fusion Power they have made a couple improvements that I like: they fattened the grip (which feels much better in your hand), and they added a battery indicator light (which it definitely needed). Though I’m not crazy about the orange trim, I think it looks better than the Mach3 Power. But, how does it shave?
I’d have to say I have no idea if it is a closer shave, but it is definitely a more comfortable one. The rubber guard they have added to the bottom allows it to conform to your face better as it pivots. It also seems to glide across you face easier. Is it worth the nine bucks? I’d say yes if you want the latest and greatest, but if you can hold off they will probably be marked down in a few months.
If your store doesn’t have them yet, you can order them here
Update (2/17/06): I have been using the razor for a couple weeks now. I have to say it is definitely better than the Mach3. When I wrote the originial review, I did not even notice the single blade on the back. This works well for trimming sideburns and under the nose.
The blades seem to hold up better too. I’m still on the original blade, and it continues to give a clean shave.
